I love this little work of art…I am assuming it is Bacchus or Dionysus, but it looks more like a Goddess than a God to me. I have read that many depictions of both Gods were kind of ambiguous in sexuality. sometimes involving traits from both sexes.
It is a small piece, measuring a mere 5″ X 4 1/2″ and about 2″ deep.
Hand crafted of Terrcotta clay and painted in a palette of brilliant yet somewhat muted purples, greens and yellows. The face is highly detailed and colored. He/she looks as if a few glasses of vino are already under the belt with those flushed cheeks and eyes at half mast!
There is a hole on the back to hang it from. A thin crack opening runs from the hole, so I think you need to hand it on a nail or run a thicker ribbon through it to keep it from slipping through.
It is in remarkably great condition being made of fragile terracotta, there are a few teeny flea bites that I can make out but other than that…perfecto!!
